Exploring the Tarot – 1 The Magician

We will be examining the Magician card, numbered 1 in the major arcana of most tarot decks. For this example, I will be using the Magician card from the Robin Wood tarot deck. The Magician stands before a table which contains the tools that represent the suits of the minor arcana. He appears confident & relaxed. Above his hand (or head in some decks) floats a figure eight, a sign of eternity.

Upright
In addition to being tapped into psychic energy, especially divination, the Magician has a lot of creative energy. He is willing to take action on the opportunities being presented to him. He has a sense of self awareness, which enables and motivates him to perfect his skills. There may be an expectation of financial success. He has a knowledge of the world, and an ability to manipulate circumstances to his benefit.

  • deception

Reversed

The contrary Magician’s arrogance can lead to self deception, sometimes caused by his reluctance to learn from past mistakes. He is weak willed and insecure. His lack of willpower can lead to mistakes and the squandering of resources. His scewed perception of self causes him to miss good opportunities and to enter ill advised ones.

Of course there are many interpretations of this card, as is the case with all cards. This is simply a jumping off point to utilize until you figure out what the card means to you.
